Externally, the device looks very stylish. It looks either like a giant capsule or like a car cushion. There is a fine grille on top and a comfortable handle behind. Everything is sold in a package, inside of which, in addition to the speaker itself, there is also a power cord - 2 pieces, and a power supply. Without additional charging, the BEATS PILL XL speaker can work for an astonishingly long time - as much as 15 hours. In my memory, previous wireless speakers could not boast of such endurance. It only takes 3 hours to charge the speaker from the mains. By the way, you can listen to it in stationary mode while the battery is being recharged. Playlists and full control are carried out directly from the phone - at a decent distance, within Bluetooth range. The sound is quite loud, I don’t even use full power, half is enough, even if you listen not in a private room, but, for example, take the speaker with you to the beach. If we talk about purity, then for electronic bass it’s just right; it doesn’t hurt the ear, but delights it. It is also convenient that you can recharge other devices from the speaker; this function is especially valuable at outdoor events.

I love taking my music everywhere, so portability is very important to me. In terms of its external dimensions, the Bits Pill X El speaker is superior to its predecessors, but due to this it sounds stronger and louder. However, everything is extremely compact in weight and comfortable to hold in your hand - the handle on the back makes this process much easier. The corporate logo, the letter B, glows beautifully when music plays on the façade of the acoustic masterpiece. By the way, I was able to unwittingly test the column for resistance to damage. It simply fell from a rather high window sill. I thought that I would have to at least take it to the workshop, but no6 nothing flew off or broke, it works as before and without malfunctions or errors. So I consider the test passed. I also checked the column for range. I had a picnic in the forest with friends, listened to music, I controlled it from my phone, moved to the maximum permitted distance - no problems arose. Since the manufacturer has been on the market for a long time and has proven itself very competently, I don’t even doubt the durability of my purchase. Rather, it will become outdated in terms of capabilities, because new products are now released with enviable regularity. This stylish speaker has many analogues, and you can find even cheaper ones, but I recommend buying Pill XL for its proven quality, good sound and its compatibility with both the Android system and iPhones. By the way, the capsule-shaped form not only looks original but is also very thoughtful in terms of sound. The speaker is not blocked even if, say, you throw the speaker on a soft blanket, or leave it in the back seat of a car. The fine grille protects the device from any damage and trouble. The oblong handle fits comfortably in the hand, so carrying Biast Pill with you is both simple and comfortable.

However, if we consider the speaker specifically from the point of view of the price category, then this is still far from the most expensive option. I would call it the golden mean in terms of price-quality ratio. It’s not a problem to find cases and original accessories to decorate the capsule; they are presented in wide abundance, so it’s a matter of taste. I didn’t add anything to my “musical pill”; I already like it very much. On a shelf with books it inspires respect, but in an open space it does not force one to listen, perfectly and loudly reproducing everything that the playlist dictates to it. I prefer something a little more upbeat, although sometimes I don’t mind being sad while listening to touching compositions.

Controlling your Beats Pill XL

To turn on the speaker, press and hold the Beats key located on the front panel for 3 seconds. In this case, the indicator on the back side will flash blue.

Then take your mobile phone and find BeatsPill in the list of Bluetooth devices, which you should connect to, after which you will hear a characteristic notification sound. When working with iPhone 6 Plus, it is recommended to set the volume to half to achieve comfortable listening. After turning off the device, you will hear a farewell melody.


Instant connection is made using NFC. Just touch the system, namely the mark on the top panel, with your mobile device, be it a smartphone or tablet. A wired connection is made by using an AUX cable.

You can synchronize multiple Pill XL speakers to achieve a powerful stereo effect. To do this, you need to activate them simultaneously when playing one track 2 times in a row, after which one will become the left speaker, and the second – the right one.

To answer or end a call, you need to use the multifunctional round button. If you need to switch between calls, press the B button.

The sound of the Beats Pill XL speakers

Four speakers have a total power of 12 watts. One small speaker is enough to fill a medium-sized room with sound. When connecting two speakers, the stereo effect is felt well, so the speaker system will sound more spacious, any frequencies are reproduced well - both low and high.


However, keep in mind that the sound of the speaker system differs with different styles of music, and it is sensitive to changes in the equalizer, even small ones. There is aptX technology, which is responsible for maintaining sound quality when connected via Bluetooth.

Design, construction

I really like the little Beats “pill”, an excellent product for the money, a second version appeared not so long ago, the sound was improved, a USB connector was added to charge other gadgets.

The larger version appeared on the market not so long ago, I still haven’t gotten around to writing a review - although the video was shot back in the summer.

The speaker comes in a cardboard package, inside there is a Pill XL, two replaceable network cables, a proprietary power supply with the letter B. As you can see, you can’t use the usual microUSB for charging here. The design of the speaker itself resembles a small “pill”, the entire front part is covered with a metal grille with perforations, there is a carrying handle at the back, making it convenient to carry the Pill from room to room. Under the flap is a microUSB service connector. Pill XL can be updated - this also applies to other company products with Bluetooth. I recommend that owners check for new software on the official website. The speaker is available in four colors: black, pink, white and gray.





On the back there is a power button, two volume buttons and a chain of indicator lights, there are five in total. In terms of operating time, everything is very good here for a speaker of this size; to highlight the indicators, press the power button.

Under the plug there is a regular USB connector; the speaker can be used to charge any gadgets, this is an excellent feature.



Behind the carrying handle there is a bass reflex port; the speakers are visible through the grille; there are four of them in total. Between the speakers there is a multifunction button, made very well - the letter B lights up when the speaker is working.




A few words about positioning, if it’s great to use a small Pill anywhere - attach it to a bicycle, take it on a picnic, take it to a party with friends - then Pill XL may well become your main home system, especially if you are not picky about sound. Why not? I will say in advance that the sound quality here is not bad, especially if you like electronic music. You can put it anywhere, the dimensions allow it - and it doesn’t matter if there is an outlet nearby, take it with you to the kitchen and listen there.

The rear part uses a combination of matte and glossy plastic; there are no complaints about the assembly. The speaker weighs approximately 1.5 kg.


Control

I’ll especially focus on the controls, button B is multifunctional, here are some possibilities:

  • To activate pairing mode, press and hold for three seconds
  • During playback, one press pauses the music
  • When there is an incoming call, one press - answer the call
  • You can switch between calls by pressing the B button
  • You can make a stereo pair from two Pill XL speakers using NFC, the logo is on the back (an interesting option)
  • Under the plug there is a 3.5 mm jack marked OUT, you will need it for connecting via cable to another speaker

You will figure out the rest of the functions yourself - the most convenient way to control the speaker is from your phone. I’ll note right away that the sound quality is good, it’s quite possible to use the Pill XL for communication instead of a phone. The speaker remembers eight previously connected devices, auto-connection works perfectly.


Nutrition

The stated operating time is 15 hours with music playback at full volume, charging time is about three hours. Let me note that this is an honest 15 hours, you can count on this figure.



Sound quality

Huge volume reserve, low frequencies are simply excellent - and in general, the sound quality is not bad. Four speakers, the carrying handle works as a stand; when paired with an iPhone 6 Plus, it’s enough to set the volume to half (even a little less) for comfortable listening.


Especially for those who are used to criticizing Beats - go to the store and listen, compare with products of similar sizes. Sound is a subjective matter; a brand has its own signature. This is not a solution for audiophiles, but rather a solution for those who constantly, often listen to music and want something universal - from this point of view, the Pill XL is fine with sound quality.

In retail, Beats Pill XL costs about 13,490 rubles, you can find it cheaper and more expensive. The speaker, of course, has competitors - these are the Jawbone Big Jambox and the Bose SoundLink III, what does Beats have? I note that the Pill XL is larger than these speakers, has a larger body, more dynamics, and more interesting sound. The thing turned out to be on the edge, just a little more, and it could no longer be called portable. But this also has its advantages; Pill XL is better suited for electronic music - everything is fine with low frequencies. These two devices may be more interesting if you often plan to take the speaker with you and the weight of the device matters. At the same time, Pill XL is quite universal, and I can confidently recommend it to young bachelors renting a home - you can connect it any way and anywhere, it takes up little space, and it’s easy to take with you when moving. And no dusty wires (network wires don’t count).
