Before we knew it, all the smartphones around us had become big. And 5-inch models, which were previously affectionately called “shovels,” have finally moved into the mainstream category; now you won’t surprise anyone with such a diagonal. But in the race for screen sizes, manufacturers have forgotten one simple truth: everyone is different. For some, a 6-inch smartphone will not be big, while for others, anything larger than 4.5 inches is huge. Apple was the first to correct this shortcoming by introducing the 4-inch iPhone SE smartphone. Whether she succeeded or not, let's see in the review.

Design
Externally, the iPhone SE is practically no different from the iPhone 5s, the only noticeable difference is that the cuts on the edges of the case now also have a matte finish. In addition, a pink body color appeared.
Otherwise, it’s still the same design familiar to us from the iPhone 5 and 5s. The dimensions of the smartphone are also similar to the older models and are 123.8x58.6x7.6 mm, with a weight of 113 grams. Thanks to this, the smartphone fits well in the hand, and your thumb can easily reach the top of the display. The ergonomics here are really at their best.
But the smaller screen, even after the iPhone 6, is quite difficult to get used to, especially when typing on the virtual keyboard.
In a couple of days you get used to it again, but you already feel a certain “stiffness” of the interface. A 4.4-inch display could easily fit into the iPhone SE body, but the thick frames here are preserved with special love, as a monument to the company’s past models.
There are no complaints about the materials of the iPhone SE case; the back of the smartphone and the edges are covered with anodized aluminum, the front panel is protected by tempered glass, and the camera window and the Home button are protected by sapphire glass.
Display
The iPhone SE uses a 4-inch IPS touchscreen display with a resolution of 1136x640 pixels (326 ppi). Unlike the iPhone 6s, the screen does not support 3D Touch pressure recognition technology.
The matrix is the same as in the iPhone 5s, with the same large frames around it. Despite the fact that today it is already small in size for a display, information from it can be read without any problems. The iOS 9.3.1 interface scales well to 4 inches, and the developers do not forget to support their applications for “small” iPhones.
The only drawback is that it’s no longer very comfortable to watch videos on the iPhone SE screen. At 720p resolution, large black bars appear at the top and bottom of the video, making the picture even smaller than it is.
Performance
The biggest differences between the iPhone SE and the 5s are on the inside, as the new smartphone is built on the same platform as the flagship iPhone 6s. The heart of the system is the dual-core Apple A9 processor running at 1.8 GHz, which is complemented by an M9 motion coprocessor. Like older versions of the iPhone, the SE model uses 2 GB of RAM, and the built-in memory can be 16 or 64 GB.
The speed of the iPhone SE is at a very good level, applications launch and work quickly. In fact, the performance here is the same as in the iPhone 6s, which is only confirmed by synthetic tests. This makes iPhone SE the fastest 4-inch smartphone available today.
Camera
The main camera in the iPhone SE is 12-megapixel with a 5-lens lens and an f/2.2 aperture, but without optical stabilization.
In addition, the pixels on the matrix have a size of 1.22µ, versus 1.5µ for the iPhone 5s. However, this does not prevent the iPhone SE from taking quite high-quality pictures in good lighting, but in poor lighting the detail drops noticeably; the matrix is not able to capture a lot of light. But this is a typical problem for smartphones, which today is solved relatively well only in larger and more expensive flagships.
The front camera in the iPhone SE is 1.2 megapixel with f/2.4 aperture, selfie lovers will be upset.
Fingerprint's scanner
The mechanical Home button, which is located under the iPhone SE display, has a fingerprint scanner built into it. Like the iPhone 5s, it allows you to add up to 5 finger scans, unlock your smartphone, log in to the App Store and iTunes content, and make purchases through the Apple Pay payment system.
The scanner works quickly, subjectively it is slower than the iPhone 6s, but faster than it was in the iPhone 5s and 6.
Autonomy
The iPhone SE uses a 1,624 mAh battery, which is slightly larger than the iPhone 5s (1,560 mAh) but smaller than the iPhone 6s (1,715 mAh). However, the autonomy of the smaller version is approximately at the same level as that of the flagship. In the Geekbench test under maximum load, the iPhone SE lasted 4 hours, while the iPhone 6s, according to test developer Primate Labs, lasted an average of 4 hours 27 minutes.
Accordingly, the iPhone SE can provide about a day of battery life in mixed mode.

The result is a truly attractive offer for those who want an iPhone, but with a screen smaller than 4 inches. One could complain that the iPhone SE brings absolutely nothing new, but this, fortunately, does not in any way affect the consumer properties of the smartphone. It’s just that Apple saved money on developing a new design, but at the same time the buyer can save money, because the iPhone SE costs less than the iPhone 6s

In the second half of March 2016, the head of Apple presented the world with the new iPhone SE. On the same day, the main characteristics of the new device and its release date in the world and the Russian Federation were announced. Tim Cook also announced the approximate price of the gadget, which surprised the audience a lot. It turned out that, despite many advantages, the phone is quite budget-friendly. Subsequently, this factor had a great influence on the popularity of the iPhone SE.
Already during the presentation, attentive viewers noticed that the SE resembles the fifth iPhone in design. And, it should be noted, the characteristics of the device also did not impress potential buyers of the new product. Whether they changed their minds after purchasing the gadget or were even more disappointed - we’ll try to figure it out in our review.
A Russian user deciphered the abbreviation in the name of the new iPhone as Special Edition. But what exactly is good about this model can be most easily determined by comparing it with the fifth and sixth line of gadgets. At the presentation it was said that the new device is not inferior in performance to its two closest predecessors. However, the dimensions of the SE, as everyone immediately noticed, turned out to be significantly smaller than other phones from Apple. Whether this is an advantage or a disadvantage is up to the user to decide. Some will be confused by the small display. And others will consider the small dimensions a big plus, because the phone will not be able to slip out of their hands.
Since many users consider the camera to be the main feature of an iPhone, this is what should be highlighted in the SE model. Advantages of the camera of the smartphone in question:
- Improved footage thanks to a 12 MP camera.
- Possibility of shooting 4K video.
- Availability of creating panoramas with a resolution of 64 MP.
- Taking “live” photographs.
- Excellent pictures even at night (the manufacturer has built a two-color flash into the device).
Of course, all these features will impress anyone. But the SE model's other interior components are just as good. At the same presentation, the manufacturer highlighted the following advantages of the model:
- Availability of A9 processor.
- Memory in 2 versions - 16 GB or 64 GB.
- Built-in Touch ID sensor.
- A powerful battery that can hold a charge for up to 13 hours during active surfing on the Internet.
So, the iPhone SE is almost no worse than the six S. But, of course, there are a number of differences. Let’s say the new product has a Touch ID sensor of the first generation, and the six S has a second generation. In addition, the SE version does not include LTE Advanced technology. This negatively affects the speed of data loading. And if in the sixth generation gadget the speed indicator is 450 Mbit, then in SE it is 3 times less.
iPhone SE performance
At a time when the release date of the iPhone SE in Russia had not yet been precisely determined, Apple fans already knew a lot about this new product. In particular, many were interested in performance indicators. We will talk about them in more detail later.
The manufacturer installed the A9 chipset in the new gadget. As always, the company did not want to equip a “fresh” device with an old version of the processor. And this is quite understandable, because at the time the SE was released, a newer model was looming on the horizon - the iPhone 7 with the A10 chipset.
In addition, due to the presence of the A9 chip and M9 coprocessor in the SE, the Siri assistant can be used in the background. In order for this assistant to be activated, all you need to do is say “Hey Siri”. The supply of processors for SE was carried out by the Taiwanese company TSMC. But there are also rumors that Samsung Corporation is also involved in this.
According to the test results, it turned out that in terms of performance, the iPhone SE is more powerful than the six S. According to AnTuTu research, the younger model scored a little more than 133 thousand points, and the older one – 132 points. By comparison, a simple six has only 80 thousand points.
Memory
The RAM capacity of the SE model is 2 GB. As for the built-in memory, users have access to variations of gadgets with memory of 16 and 32 GB. According to research, thanks to a good amount of memory, tabs in the Safari browser are saved for a longer period than in the fifth iPhone. In addition, they are rebooted much less frequently. Thanks to this, traveling across the global network becomes more efficient. The user can go to any open tab without waiting for it to refresh.
Battery
Journalists from one of the American newspapers tested the iPhone SE regarding the length of its battery life. This study also included iPhones 5 and 6 models S and Samsung Galaxy S7. The new device from Apple performed just fine, although the conditions were created equal.
It turned out that the iPhone SE lasts 2 hours longer on a single full battery charge than other Apple gadgets. And when compared with the Galaxy, the Korean device ran out of charge 3 hours earlier than the iPhone SE.
Cameras – main and front
The selfie camera characteristics of the SE are exactly the same as the six S cameras – 1.2 MP. The new device received the “live photo” function, but all gadgets in the sixth line have the same feature (except for the simple six).
Video recording with 4K quality and a frequency of 30 frames per second has become available.
iPhone SE cost in Russia
As noted at the beginning of the article, the price of the smartphone was announced at the presentation. It is very important that the manufacturer did not forget to mention this. For many buyers, the cost of a mobile phone is an important factor in their purchasing decision. And here Apple was able to attract the attention of fans.
The price for the SE model turned out to be very affordable and at the beginning of sales was about $400 (on average, 28,000 rubles). Apple management focused on the rich “filling” of the device and the same functions. Thus, the iPhone SE model became the most inexpensive in the history of the company. But, importantly, at a low price, the quality remains at the same level.
It is for these reasons that Russian residents should pay attention to the iPhone SE. According to experts, in our country it is simply unrealistic to buy a smartphone with a similar set of functions for such a price. And, in fact, SE is a smaller version of the iPhone 6S.
Based on all of the above, we can say that the iPhone SE will be a great purchase for everyone.
iPhone SE release date in Russia
The release date of this gadget in our country was slightly shifted. As always, the new product was first sold in the USA and Europe, and Russia became one of the countries in the second wave of sales. And in countries such as India, the new device hit the shelves even later.
In the Russian Federation, Apple fans were able to purchase an iPhone SE in early April 2016. In the company's official online store, a pre-order service for the model was available, which many took advantage of.

And the release of the iPhone SE completely caused a resonance on the Internet: someone predicted huge sales for it and rejoiced at the appearance of an updated compact smartphone, while others, on the contrary, were perplexed as to how they dared to release such an old model with a new filling and who could it even be for? needed? The truth traditionally lies between two extremes, and now we move directly to the review itself.

The smartphone comes in a traditional Apple compact box, the equipment is standard, only the headset has changed over the years. Separately, I would like to note that unpacking Apple equipment is always an aesthetic pleasure: everything is neatly folded, there are no stupid blisters, each part of the kit is easily removed and is immediately ready for use.
Appearance, materials, control elements, assembly
The design of the iPhone SE has remained virtually unchanged compared to the 5s, except for the addition of an additional pink color. This is exactly what I had on the test. No matter what anyone says, Apple has no problems with the design of its smartphones, so all of their devices starting with the iPhone 4 look really cool.
Pleasantly cooling aluminum, glass inserts on the sides, glass on the front side, neat power and volume buttons. The 5 had an excellent design, and I don’t think it’s a downside to keep it for the SE version. Remember how many years Apple has been using the good appearance of its MacBooks.

Several important clarifications. It is not indicated anywhere exactly which generation of Touch ID is used in the iPhone SE, as far as I know, it works slower than in the 6s/6s Plus, but much faster than in my iPhone 6, this is such a paradox. The speaker has excellent sound quality and volume reserve; the smartphone can be used perfectly as a portable speaker. And the edges in the iPhone SE have become matte, they are more resistant to scratches; let me remind you that in the original “fives” this element was glossy. And a little fact about the assembly: I was the owner of an iPhone 5s, its power button was a little loose, unfortunately, the SE also inherited this problem.
Dimensions
The dimensions of the new iPhone SE are perhaps one of the most interesting parts to discuss. To be honest, I’m already unaccustomed to such compact smartphones; I don’t even remember when I tested something of similar size (probably it was the iPhone 5s). You can safely write about this smartphone that it is convenient to use with one hand, and it is also much lighter than most of the five-inch models we are used to.
Compared to iPhone 6
Screen
Let's start with the positives. The display has excellent viewing angles, brightness range and excellent behavior in the sun. I also really like how automatic brightness adjustment works, however, this is a virtue of all iPhones. Of course, there are better screens, but the capabilities of the iPhone SE display are enough for most users.
Among the shortcomings, I will note some yellowness of the screen. If you compare it directly with the iPhone 6, you can see that the SE is noticeably yellow, but if there is no example for comparison, then you will not even notice it.
Is it convenient to use a device with a 4-inch screen in 2016? On the one hand, Apple has done everything to improve the owner’s interaction with the display: icons are arranged as tightly as possible, the scale of the application interface is slightly reduced in comparison with Android to accommodate more information, etc. And with SE you can easily type text with one hand.
But it was still not possible to avoid the shortcomings with its size; they are especially noticeable when reading articles through a browser (without a separate mode, sites can only be read in horizontal orientation) and when typing. One of the reasons I didn’t like the iPhone 5s was that the display width was too small; when typing with two hands (and I prefer it this way), your thumbs almost become intertwined in a tight knot.

I would like to note that recently iOS works worse on devices older than a year (take my iPhone 6, for example), but on the new iPhone SE there were no problems with speed and stability.
Performance
And although the iPhone SE looks like a complete copy of the 5s, inside it has the same chipset as the latest iPhone 6s, and the same 2 GB of RAM. And this, of course, has a significant impact on performance. In addition to the fact that the SE works much faster than the 5s in the interface, it copes much better with any, even the most productive games. However, when working with the latter, the SE gets pretty hot, so you won’t be able to play for a long time, however, the small display is not conducive to this.
Autonomous operation
One of my first iPhones was the same iPhone 5s, whose successor is the SE. There were exactly two things that irritated me about it: the small screen, which caused me to periodically miss the letters and write with typos, and the short battery life, which caused the smartphone to run out of charge by the middle of the day.
In the case of the SE, I was pleasantly surprised by its operating time; in my opinion, it lasts even longer than the iPhone 6, the difference is 10%. You can safely count on three hours of screen activity at maximum brightness with a mobile connection and synchronization enabled.
Camera
From the iPhone 6s, the smartphone inherited not only performance, but also the same camera, which, I can’t help but notice, does not protrude from the body! The quality of the images is comparable to the same 6s, this is a very good level, although inferior to the top-end Galaxy S7 or LG G4, but for most users the camera’s capabilities are enough for the eyes. iPhone cameras have another nice feature - their simplicity. You don't have to try hard to get a good shot, you just point the camera, hit "shoot" and you're done. But the front camera remains 1.2 MP, which for some will be a disadvantage. But it supports Retina Flash, when the screen acts as a flash. Below are examples of photos and videos taken on the iPhone SE and the same shots taken on a regular iPhone 6 for comparison.

Finally, you can forget about every rumor about the new iPhone 5 SE, which by the time of Apple’s presentation began to get pretty boring. Today in the review we will figure out what the new-old iPhone SE has become (that is the name of the model, and not as many mistakenly call it iPhone 5 SE or iPhone 6 SE), we will analyze the work of engineers from Apple, and find out who the device is aimed at, and what it is different from the iPhone 6S.
After Greg Jozwiak came on stage and showed off the new iPhone SE, I went nuts. Apple marketers did a brilliant thing: they put hardware from the iPhone 6S into the iPhone 5S case and sell it as a completely new phone. From the manufacturer’s point of view, this is brilliant - it turns out that many parts of the case are interchangeable. This will also have a positive impact on the availability of repairs for the average user - we know what prices they charge for a simple screen replacement for the same iPhone 6s, but here it will easily cost from five.
The price of 399 dollars for a modern phone is quite good, but in Russia this figure from the officials miraculously turns into 37,990 rubles, i.e. at the current exchange rate it’s almost 570 bucks. Excuse me, but this is a complete robbery, there is no other way to call it.
Since we're talking about price, we need to mention modifications, and there will be only two of them - 16 GB and 64 GB. I don’t see the point at all in the initial version, especially considering that the new model can shoot video in 4K resolution. 64 GB looks more interesting, but for additional volume you have to pay a slightly different amount - 100 bucks more. It would be better if they made 32 and 64 GB versions, but they are run by marketers who know that you will buy the 64 GB version if you buy at all.
There will be four color options, and pink will be added to the classic silver, gold and space gray, so glamorous FIFAs who don’t reach the top 6 now have something to dream about again.
I know that many fans of Apple technology would like the iPhone SE to have a design identical to the iPhone 6S, but “figs,” as the hero of one famous cartoon said! But the smartphone will not fall out of hands - the dirty iPhone 6 slips out of users much more often than the previous 5.
Now let's talk about hardware. Even though the iPhone 5 SE incorporates almost everything that's great about the 6S, there are some important changes.
I almost forgot! The SE is one of the lightest smartphones ever. He loses to the leaders by only a couple of grams.
The four-inch display will not receive 3D Touch pressure recognition technology, which to this day remains an exclusive feature of the 6S and its brother, the 6S+.
By the way, about the displays themselves. Even despite their seemingly identical nature, the iPhone 6S uses a matrix with better contrast, and the pixels are made using dual domain technology, while the iPhone SE does not. They provide a wider viewing angle. Otherwise, all parameters - be it pixel density or brightness - are the same.
If the main camera is the same as the flagship, then the front camera remains poor, only 1-2 megapixels versus 5 megapixels. Selfie lovers, you can cry! The rest don’t really care what kind of camera is used for video calls in our terrible 3G.
The iPhone 5 SE also did not receive the fast second-generation Touch ID, thanks to which the smartphone recognizes a fingerprint in a split second.
By the way, the inscription SE means Special Edition, i.e. special version – Apple chief marketer Phil Schiller spoke about this.

Due to the smaller display size, the iPhone SE demonstrates excellent performance, and in the AnTuTu benchmark tests the new product earned more than 125,000 points, which is almost the same as the iPhone 6S+, although for the most part, no one is interested in these tests, because the device works quickly.
That's where, and in terms of battery life, the iPhone SE is the leader. The built-in battery will allow you to surf the Internet for 2 hours more than on the 6S. Everything is very clear here: the display is smaller - so is the weight loss.
Otherwise, all the filling is identical: the Apple A9 processor with an M9 coprocessor, 2 GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel main camera, an NFC module, even such features as “Hey Siri” on a non-chargeable iPhone, and pampering in the form of Live Photos is here.
In fact, we got a smaller 6 for less money, but anyone who is already accustomed to a 4.7-inch display is unlikely to want to exchange it for something smaller. On the other hand, people who do not have the money for a top-end iPhone now have the opportunity to purchase a new product with an old design. True, affordability of prices in Russia is a very controversial issue.
